The 9-1-1 infrastructure was designed in the 1970s for circuit-switched wireline, and is inadequate for many of today’s commonly used communication technologies, like VoIP, wireless, text, video and telematics. The safety repercussions created by the limited infrastructure have forced the 9-1-1 community to take a look at how to transition 9-1-1 systems to fully address the myriad forms of communication in use today by the public.
